Power dialing vs progressive dialing: which fits your team

The practical difference between progressive and power dialing, the abandonment problem, and how to choose a mode without annoying the people you call.

2026-07-21 · 7 min read

Both modes dial automatically. The difference is how many lines are opened per agent, and that one number determines both your call volume and how many strangers pick up the phone to silence.

Progressive: one line per agent

The next record appears, a short pause gives the rep a moment to read it, and the call dials. One call at a time. The rep is always on the line when the customer answers, so abandonment is effectively zero.

The cost is idle time. Every unanswered call, every voicemail, every wrong number is time the rep spends waiting. On a list with a 20% answer rate, most of the hour is ringing.

Power: several lines per agent

The dialer opens multiple calls per available agent and connects the first person who answers. Idle time drops sharply. The problem is arithmetic: if two people answer at once and only one agent is free, somebody gets hung up on or hears silence.

The abandonment problem is not just etiquette

Several EU markets regulate abandoned-call rates, and the rules are not identical across borders — which matters if you are calling into more than one country. Beyond the legal question, an abandoned call is a person who now associates your company with a nuisance call. That is expensive brand damage for a marginal gain in dials per hour.

A reasonable way to choose

  1. Start on progressive for a week and measure your actual answer rate.
  2. If answers are above roughly 25%, progressive is probably already efficient enough — the idle time is small.
  3. If answers are low and the list is large and cold, move to power with a conservative ratio.
  4. Watch the abandonment number weekly, not monthly. It moves with list quality.
Whatever mode you pick, the number that actually predicts revenue is conversations per hour, not dials per hour. A mode that doubles dials and halves connect quality has made things worse.
