What to have in place before you cold call in Denmark
A practical checklist for B2B calling in Denmark. This is about what to have in place operationally — it is not legal advice, and the last section says where to get that.
Cold calling businesses in Denmark is normal and widely done. What gets teams into trouble is almost never the first call; it is not being able to show, months later, what they did and why.
An opt-out that actually works
Someone will ask not to be called again, and that request has to survive: the rep leaving, the list being re-imported, and the same company appearing under a slightly different name. If your do-not-call state lives on a row that gets overwritten by the next CSV, you do not have an opt-out — you have a note.
Test it the honest way. Mark a record, re-import the list it came from, and check the flag is still there.
Records of what happened
- When you called, who called, and what was agreed.
- Where the contact details came from — which list, which source, when.
- Any objection to being contacted, and when it was actioned.
The third one matters most and is the one usually missing. "We removed them" is a much weaker answer than a timestamp.
If you record calls
Recording changes what you have to tell people and what you have to be able to delete later. Say it at the start of the call, in plain words, and keep the recording somewhere you can actually find and remove a single call from. A retention period you have written down and follow is worth more than a longer one you have not thought about.
Where to check the rules
Two places worth reading directly rather than second-hand: Datatilsynet on personal data, and Forbrugerombudsmanden on marketing practice. The distinction between calling a business and calling a person matters, and it is worth understanding which side of it your list sits on.
If you are calling at volume, or into other EU countries, an hour with a lawyer who does this is cheaper than the alternative. This article is not that hour.
